Portable Storage for Moving
Looking to move at your own pace? Portable storage units are a great option for a DIY move.
How a DIY Move With a Portable Container Works
A rental truck gives you one day and a deadline. A portable container gives you every evening and weekend between now and the move. We set a 16-foot (8×8) box in your driveway, you keep living in the house and load it a little at a time, and when you are ready Steedle drives the loaded container to the new address — or holds it at our West Deptford yard if the keys are not in your hand yet.
How you use the container for a DIY move
- We deliver the box weeks before moving day. Call for a free estimate with your dates and the new address, and we set the clean, dry 16-ft (8×8) container in the driveway early. There is no truck rental clock, and you never tow or move the container — that is our job at both ends.
- Load in reverse order of how much you need it. Start with the guest room, the basement, the garage, off-season clothes and the books, then work toward the everyday things in the last week. Heavy and square goes in first and low; lamps, mirrors and the awkward pieces go on last near the doors.
- Live with the box on-site while it fills. The house stays usable the whole time because the container is a room in the driveway rather than a truck you have to give back. Load an hour a night, stop when you are tired, lock it, and pick it up again Saturday.
- Steedle moves the box — to the new place or to the yard. On your date we pick the loaded container up and deliver it to the new address. If closing slides or the new place is not ready, the same loaded box goes to our West Deptford warehouse at 1152 Crown Point Road and comes to you when you say so.
- Unload at the new house at your pace. The container sits in the new driveway while you unpack room by room instead of stacking the whole house in the living room in one afternoon. Call when it is empty and we take it away.
What belongs in the box for a move
Pack it like you would pack a truck: boxed kitchenware and books, clothing and linens, mattresses and bed frames, dressers, sofas and dining sets, patio furniture, bikes and sports gear, tools, holiday bins, and the whole contents of the closets and the basement. Box the small things rather than loading them loose, label for the room they are going to at the new house, and keep documents, medication, valuables and the first-night bag in the car with you rather than in the container.
Keep out of the container: anything illegal, and the things no storage unit should hold — flammables and fuel, propane tanks, the gas out of the mower, perishable food, plants and pets. No interior modifications either: no shelving bolted in, no straps screwed to the walls, no drilling or cutting. And leave the moving of the container to us at both addresses.
On-site or West Deptford between two closing dates
Keep it on-site when the two dates line up and the box only has to go from your old driveway to your new one. You load at the old house, we move it, you unload at the new house.
Send it to our West Deptford warehouse when they do not line up — you settle Friday and take possession three weeks later, the buyer wants the house empty now, you are between leases, or the new place needs paint and floors before furniture goes in. We hold the loaded container at 1152 Crown Point Road and deliver it to the new address once you have keys. It can come back to a different address than the one it left.
Optional packing and loading
Loading at your own pace over days is the point of a container, and most people do exactly that. If the timeline tightens or the heavy furniture is more than your helpers can manage, packing and loading are available as optional services — useful when you are moving out of state and cannot spend two weekends on it, when work will not give you the days, or when it is just you and a set of stairs. Ask when you call for your estimate.
$125 a month — call to schedule
Portable storage is $125 per month, which matters on a move that stretches across two billing months or stalls between closings. Call (856) 848-4854 to check availability, set a delivery date and give us the new address. Steedle Moving & Storage has been family-owned since 1918 and works out of 1152 Crown Point Road, West Deptford, NJ.
