Portable Storage Rentals in Maple Shade, NJ

Portable Storage Units, Storage Containers, Rental Units

Maple Shade has a chapter of its Township Code devoted entirely to temporary storage units, and it is firm: a $10 permit, 30 days, one permit per property per year, and driveway only. Steedle Portable Storage rents a 16-foot (8×8) container for $150 per month, delivered from our yard at 1152 Crown Point Road in West Deptford. Chapter 186 limits units to 20 feet, so ours fits. The unusual part is timing: the code says you have seven days after the unit arrives to get the permit. Call (856) 848-4854 for a free estimate. Family-owned since 1918.

What Chapter 186 says

The Code defines a “portable storage unit” as a transportable unit designed and used primarily for temporary storage of building materials (before they are used for building), household goods and other such materials, on a limited basis on residential property. The key rules:

  • Where allowed (§ 186-2(A)). The R-1, R-2 and RA residential zoning districts. Other districts follow the zoning rules of that district (§ 186-4).
  • Permit timing. Within seven days of placing a unit on property you own, rent, occupy or control, you must get a permit from the Township Building Office. The fee is set in Chapter 88.
  • Duration (§ 186-2(B)). 30 days. A permit for a unit used during construction on the same property may be renewed for up to five more 30-day periods, a maximum of six months. Renewal must be requested before the permit expires, is at the Code Enforcement Officer’s discretion, and requires proof of a current building permit. A denial can be appealed to the Township Council.
  • Once a year (§ 186-2(C)). Only one permit per property, including all renewals, in a 12-month period.
  • Driveway (§ 186-3(B)). The unit may be placed only in the property driveway, at the furthest accessible point from the street.
  • One unit on a residential property at a time (§ 186-3(A)), and no more than 20 feet long (§ 186-3(F)).
  • Contents. No hazardous material or organic waste; no construction debris, business inventory, commercial goods or goods belonging to another property. The Township may inspect the contents on reasonable notice (§ 186-3(C), (D)).
  • Condition. You must keep the unit free of deterioration, rust, tears or holes (§ 186-3(E)).
  • Penalty (§ 186-5). Removal of the unit plus the general penalty in Chapter 1, Article II.

Permit, fee, form and contacts

Fee: the Township fee schedule (Chapter 88) lists “Permits for temporary storage units: $10. No fee is required for renewal.” Street vs driveway: driveway only; nothing in the chapter allows placement on the street. Form: we did not find a posted application for portable storage units. The Construction Office page has the building permit forms and the Township’s Land Use page has a general Zoning Permit Application (PDF), but that form is written for fences, pools and construction under Code § 205-81, and the Code sends the storage-unit permit to the Building Office. So call the Building Office to get the right form rather than assuming that one.

Because the permit can follow delivery by up to seven days, plan to apply the day the unit arrives, and have your driveway layout decided before then.

Driveway or warehouse in Maple Shade

For a move or a short renovation, 30 days on your driveway is the starting point; construction projects can reach six months with a building permit. See on-site portable storage.

With only one permit per property per 12 months and no street option, a second project in the same year is where off-site storage at our West Deptford warehouse helps. It also suits decluttering. We also serve Moorestown and Mount Laurel nearby.

What belongs in the box

Typical loads are household goods, boxed papers and books, furniture and the contents of rooms being painted, floored or remodeled. Illegal items, flammables and fuel, propane, perishable food, plants and pets stay out, and there are no interior modifications. Optional packing and loading are available.
