What Chapter 84 says about portable storage units
Article III of Chapter 84 (“Dumpsters and Portable Storage Units”) is titled “Use and Placement of Portable Storage Units or Containers.” It was broadened by Ordinance 8-2023, adopted April 4, 2023, and it defines such a container to include “Portable Storage On Demand or PODS.” The rules, in plain language:
- Permit. No one may place a portable storage unit on residential property without a permit from the Zoning Office. Putting one in a public area (street, sidewalk, right-of-way, Township parking lot) also needs written approval from the Police Department first.
- Fee. $20.
- Duration. In a residential zone, the permit is valid for 21 calendar days and may be renewed for additional seven-day periods, up to a total of 35 days per calendar year. In a public area, the permit is valid for seven days, renewable in seven-day periods, up to 21 days per year.
- One unit, limited size. No more than one unit on the property at a time, and no more than eight feet high, eight feet wide or 16 feet long. That is the footprint of our container.
- Setbacks. In residential zones the unit must be at least 10 feet from any property line and 10 feet from the front curb or the edge of the roadway if there is no curb. The Zoning Officer approves final placement.
- Condition. Not to be used as an accessory structure in any zone, kept in good condition and locked with a combination-style lock (no key locks) when not in use, and free of waste, refuse and hazardous substances. The only signage permitted is a serial number and the rental company’s name, address and phone.
- Safety review. No permit is issued if the Police or Fire Department finds it would endanger public safety or unreasonably interfere with traffic. A permit may be revoked if the unit becomes a hazard or nuisance.
- Penalty. A fine of $100 to $2,000 per violation; each day after written notice counts as a separate offense. The Township can remove the unit and place the cost as a lien on the property.
Applying, step by step
- Check the setbacks. With a 10-foot setback from the lot line and from the curb or edge of road, a short or narrow driveway may not qualify. Measure before you apply.
- Complete the Township’s “Dumpster & Storage Unit Permit Application.” The Code requires the applicant and owner names and addresses, the street address, the unit’s size and proposed location, and how long it will be there.
- Pay $20 and submit to the Zoning Office. Do this before delivery; the Code bars placing a unit without a permit.
- Give us the permitted dates. We deliver from West Deptford and pick up before the 21-day permit ends, or you request a seven-day renewal in time.
- Check the lock rule. The Code wants a combination-style lock (no key locks) when the unit is not in use, so ask us about the lock when you schedule delivery.

A river township with a business park and farmland
The Township describes itself as 23 square miles along the Delaware River, a mix of residential, farmland, commercial, industrial and retail areas, and home to one of the largest business-park settings in the United States. That mix means different rules apply depending on your zone: the setback and 21-day clock above are the residential rules, while commercial and industrial sites must put a unit in the rear or side of the site, never in a fire lane or loading zone.
In the driveway, with the 21-day permit, suits a quick move or a room-by-room renovation. See on-site portable storage.
At our warehouse is the better answer if your driveway cannot meet the 10-foot setbacks, or if you will go past 35 days in the year, which the Code does not allow. It also suits a larger decluttering job. See off-site portable storage. We also serve Woolwich Township and Swedesboro nearby.
What belongs in the box
Boxed household goods, furniture, garage and basement contents, and the belongings from a room under renovation all fit well. Keep out anything illegal, flammables and fuel, propane, perishable food, plants and pets. No interior modifications. Optional packing and loading are available.Logan Township portable storage: common questions
