Portable Storage Rentals in Harrison Township, NJ

Portable Storage Units, Storage Containers, Rental Units

Harrison Township, the township with the Mullica Hill mailing address, regulates portable on-demand storage structures by name, and the rule is short: 7 days, a permit, the driveway. Steedle Portable Storage rents a 16-foot (8×8) container for $150 per month, delivered from 1152 Crown Point Road in West Deptford. The Township Code (§ 159-9) requires a permit from the Enforcement Officer, approved by the Police Department, valid for seven days and renewable once for seven more. That is a hard limit for a long project, which is where our warehouse storage helps. Call (856) 848-4854 for a free estimate. Family-owned since 1918.

What Harrison Township’s code says

Article III of Chapter 159 (Property Maintenance) is titled “Portable On-Demand Storage Structures,” and it has one section, § 159-9. The Code defines the term as a container or storage unit “typically rented to owners or occupants of property for their temporary use” and “customarily delivered and removed by truck.” Here are the rules for a house:

  • Permit. You may not place or use a unit on or along a public area without a permit from the Enforcement Officer, upon approval from the Police Department. Use is only permitted where a permit has been issued.
  • Application. You get the form from the Enforcement Officer and return it with a sketch showing the location of the unit on the site and its distance from other buildings, fire hydrants and utilities. It asks for the applicant and owner, the street address, the unit size and location, and how long the unit will be there.
  • Driveway. All units shall be placed in driveways unless otherwise approved by the Enforcement Officer.
  • Duration. The permit is valid for seven days and may be renewed for an additional seven-day period, not to exceed a total of 14 days. In exceptional circumstances the Enforcement Officer may alter the permit to extend the time.
  • Residential setback. In residential districts units may not be in a public area and must be at least 10 feet back from the front property line. Final placement is to the Enforcement Officer’s satisfaction.
  • Limit. No more than two units on one property at a time.
  • Safety and condition. No permit if the Police Department finds it a danger to public safety or an unwarranted interference with traffic. A permit may be revoked if the unit becomes a hazard or nuisance. The unit must be kept in good condition, locked with a combination-style lock (no key locks) when not in use, and must not hold waste, refuse or hazardous substances.
  • Signs. The only signage allowed is a serial number and the name, address and phone of the rental company.
  • Not a shed. Units shall never be utilized as accessory structures in any zoning district.

Violations of the chapter are punishable by a fine up to $2,000, up to 90 days in jail or up to 90 days of community service, and each day is a separate offense (§ 159-23). The Code gives rules for nonresidential districts too (rear or side only, never in front, fire lanes or grass), but this page is about homes.

Permit details, form and contacts

Fee: § 159-9 does not state a fee, and we did not find one in the Township’s fee chapter. Ask when you request the form. Form: the Code says to get the application from the Enforcement Officer. We did not find a portable-storage application posted on the Township’s Property Maintenance / Code Enforcement page, whose downloadable forms are a complaint form and registration forms. So there is no direct link to give you; call or visit. (The Township does have a separate dumpster permit, handled by the Construction Office with Police approval, in § 159-15.)

Why 14 days drives the choice

Seven days with one seven-day renewal is a short window, so think about the timeline before you book. A one-day move might fit. A kitchen or bathroom renovation likely won’t, and neither will a staged move with a gap between closings.

On-site works when the project fits inside the permit: the container goes on the driveway, at least 10 feet from the front property line, with a combination lock. See on-site portable storage.

Off-site avoids the permit clock. We pick up the loaded container and keep it at 1152 Crown Point Road until you are ready. See off-site portable storage or decluttering. Neighboring pages: Woolwich Township, Mantua Township and Glassboro.

What belongs in the box

Boxed household goods, furniture, garage and basement contents, and the belongings from a room under renovation all fit well. Keep out anything illegal, flammables and fuel, propane, perishable food, plants and pets. No interior modifications. Optional packing and loading are available.

Harrison Township portable storage: common questions

Does Harrison Township require a permit for a portable storage container?

Yes. § 159-9 requires a permit from the Enforcement Officer, upon approval from the Police Department, before a portable on-demand storage structure is placed or used.

How long can the container stay?

The permit is valid for seven days and may be renewed once for seven more, not to exceed 14 days total. The Enforcement Officer may extend it in exceptional circumstances.

Can it go on the street?

Not in a residential district. The Code says units shall not be placed in a public area, and shall be placed in driveways unless the Enforcement Officer approves otherwise.

How far back from the street must it be?

In residential zones, at least 10 feet from the front property line, with final placement to the Enforcement Officer’s satisfaction.

How much is the permit, and is there an online form?

The Code does not state a fee, and we did not find a posted portable-storage form. The application comes from the Enforcement Officer. Call (856) 478-4111.

What if my project takes longer than 14 days?

Steedle can store your container at our West Deptford warehouse so it does not sit in the driveway. A 16-foot (8×8) container is $150 per month.
