What § 203-76.2 says

Woolwich Township’s zoning chapter includes § 203-76.2, “Use and placement of portable storage units and pods” (added April 16, 2012, Ord. No. 2012-12). It defines a portable storage unit/pod as a container for storing personal property that is typically rented for temporary use and customarily delivered and removed by truck. The rules for a home:

  • Permit. No one may place a pod on property they own, rent or occupy without a permit from the Township Zoning Officer. Any placement on a public area (street, sidewalk, right-of-way, Township parking lot) needs written approval from the Police Department as well.
  • Application. Name and address of the applicant and owner, the street address, the size and proposed location of the unit, how long it will be on site, and a sketch plot or plan of survey showing the specific area.
  • Fee. $30 for the application and $30 for any renewal, payable when you apply.
  • Duration. Detached single-family: 14 calendar days, renewable once for 14 more (28 maximum), with the renewal application made before the permit expires and renewal at the Code Enforcement Officer’s discretion. Multifamily: three calendar days. Non-residential: 30 days, renewable once for 30 (60 maximum).
  • Frequency. Only one permit per property, including renewals, in any twelve-month period.
  • Location (residential). Pods may be in any detached single-family residential district but not in a public area except as provided. The unit must be immediately adjacent to or in the driveway at the furthest accessible point from the street, with final placement to the Zoning Officer’s satisfaction, considering setbacks, site lines, slope, aesthetics and safety.
  • One unit, 20 feet maximum. Only one pod at a single-family property at a time, and no pod over 20 feet in length. Ours is 16 feet.
  • Contents. No construction debris, business inventory, commercial goods or goods for another property, no hazardous material or organic waste, and nothing stored outside the unit. The Township may inspect on reasonable notice.
  • Penalty. Removal at the applicant’s expense and a fine of up to $100 per day; each day is a separate offense. Any deviation from the time, location or size limits needs a bulk variance from the Joint Land Use Board.

Applying, step by step

  1. Measure your driveway. The permit hinges on the furthest accessible point from the street, so you need to know where a 16-foot box fits without blocking the garage or a sightline.
  2. Prepare the sketch. Mark the unit on a plan of survey or a hand sketch showing the driveway, the lot lines and the house.
  3. Submit to the Zoning Officer with $30. Tell the Township how long you need it: the single-family cap is 14 days plus one 14-day renewal.
  4. We deliver once you are approved, from West Deptford, and collect the unit before the permit expires.

The Township’s Zoning Office page lists the Zoning Application and related forms: Woolwich Zoning Office and zoning forms. We did not find a form on the Township’s site named for portable storage, so the permit is requested through the Zoning Officer under § 203-76.2; ask them which form they want you to submit. The Code is on eCode360: Article VII, Supplemental Use Controls (§ 203-76.2).

Farmland, new neighborhoods, and a short clock

The Township’s own words: 21 square miles where “rich farmland landscapes blend seamlessly with modern living,” about 20 miles from Philadelphia. If your street has an HOA, check its rules too; the Township permit does not replace them.

On the driveway is workable for a weekend-sized job: a fast move, or one room’s renovation that fits into 28 days. See on-site portable storage.

At our warehouse is the sensible choice for everything else: the permit window is short, you only get one per year, and a long decluttering or a build that may run into months does not fit. The container waits at 1152 Crown Point Road. See off-site portable storage. Nearby we also serve Swedesboro, Logan Township and Harrison Township.

What belongs in the box

Think furniture, mattresses, boxed belongings, tools and the overflow from a garage or spare room. The box is not the place for anything illegal, flammables and fuel, propane, perishable food, plants or pets, and the interior cannot be modified. If you want loading help, packing and loading are available as an option.

Woolwich Township portable storage: common questions

Do I need a permit for a portable storage container in Woolwich Township?

Yes. Section 203-76.2 of the zoning code requires a permit from the Township Zoning Officer before you place a portable storage unit/pod on a single-family, multifamily or non-residential property. The application fee is $30.

How long can a pod stay on my driveway?

A detached single-family permit is valid for 14 calendar days and can be renewed once for another 14 days, for 28 days total. Multifamily permits are three days. Only one permit per property, including renewals, may be issued in a twelve-month period.

Can the container go on the street?

Not as a normal matter. Residential pods must be adjacent to or in the driveway at the furthest accessible point from the street. Any placement in a public area needs written Police Department approval and a Zoning Officer permit.

How big can the container be?

No more than 20 feet in length. Steedle’s container is 16 feet long (8×8). Only one pod is allowed at a single-family property at a time.

What happens if I go over the time limit?

The Township can remove the unit at your expense and fine up to $100 per day, with each day a separate offense. Changing the time, location or size limits requires a bulk variance from the Joint Land Use Board.

Who do I call?

The Zoning Office, through the main Township number, (856) 467-2666, options 1 or 2. The Municipal Building is at 120 Village Green Drive, open Monday–Thursday 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Friday 8 a.m. to 12 p.m.
