What § 10-11 of the Pitman Code requires
Chapter 10 (Building and Construction) of the Borough Code includes § 10-11, “Temporary Storage Units,” adopted in 2010 and amended in 2011. It defines a portable storage unit as a container for storing personal property that is typically rented for temporary use and delivered and removed by truck. That is a good description of our container. The rules:
- Where allowed. In all zoning districts except the Park-Conservation District, for the temporary storage of non-disposable items by the owner or occupant.
- Time. No more than 30 consecutive days at a site and no more than 60 days in a calendar year. After a fire, hurricane or other disaster, or in extenuating circumstances, the owner may ask the Borough for more time.
- One unit, maximum 10 feet wide, 9 feet high and 20 feet long. A 16-foot (8×8) container fits.
- Surface and setback. A hard concrete or asphalt surface, set back at least five feet from any property line where feasible. On residential property where a hard surface is not feasible, the Zoning Officer may approve another spot.
- Parking. The required number of off-street parking spaces must be maintained, though on a residential lot the Zoning Officer may allow an exception if the household follows all Borough parking rules, including the ban on overnight street parking.
- Street vs driveway. Private citizens may not place a unit on public land, including a right-of-way or parking lot, unless the Mayor and Council and the Police Department approve. Fire lanes, loading zones and any public right-of-way are strictly prohibited. It must not block a fire hydrant, interfere with traffic or obstruct the view of an intersection.
- Use. Keep it locked when not in use, never use it as an accessory structure, and keep waste, refuse and hazardous substances out of it.
- Penalty. Each day in violation is a separate offense, with a fine of not more than $25 per day, and a unit without a permit is removed at the owner’s expense.
Getting the permit
- Fill out the Borough’s Temporary Storage Unit Permit Application. It asks for the block, lot and street, and your name, address, phone and email. The Code also requires the name, address and telephone number of the company delivering the unit, which is us.
- Add a sketch. The Code requires a sketch showing the unit’s location and its distance from buildings, property lines, fire hydrants and utilities.
- Pay $25. Fees are payable to the Borough of Pitman and collected at Borough Hall. The permit is issued for up to 30 days.
- Schedule our delivery. We deliver from West Deptford once you hold the permit and remove the unit before it expires.

Planning a Pitman job around 30 and 60 days
The Borough lists a Historic Commission, a Christmas Parade and craft shows among its pages, and the 60-day-a-year cap is the number that matters most for you. If you rent a box for a move in spring, you have used part of your yearly allowance before a fall renovation even starts, so plan the year, not just the job.
On your driveway is a good fit for a focused move or a kitchen renovation that fits inside 30 days. See on-site portable storage.
At our warehouse is how you get past the cap: the loaded container stays at 1152 Crown Point Road, on our property, for as long as you need it. It also suits a long decluttering project or a house sale where the driveway has to look clear. See off-site portable storage. We also serve Mantua Township and Glassboro nearby, with different local rules.
What belongs in the box
Most people load furniture, boxed kitchenware, seasonal items and the contents of a room that is being redone. Please keep out illegal items, flammables and fuel, propane, perishable food, plants and pets, and do not modify the inside of the container. Packing and loading help is optional.Pitman portable storage: common questions
Do I need a permit for a portable storage container in Pitman?
Yes. Section 10-11 of the Borough Code requires a permit for each portable storage unit before it is placed. The fee is $25, and the permit is issued for up to 30 days. Applications go to the Zoning Officer.
How long can a container stay in Pitman?
No more than 30 consecutive days at one site and no more than 60 days in a calendar year. The Borough may grant more time after a fire, hurricane or other disaster, or in extenuating circumstances.
Can I put a container in the street or on the sidewalk?
No. A private citizen may not place a unit on public land such as a right-of-way or parking lot unless the Mayor and Council and the Police Department approve, and fire lanes, loading zones and public rights-of-way are strictly prohibited. Use your driveway or another hard surface on your own property.
What size and surface rules apply?
One unit per property, at most 10 feet wide, 9 feet high and 20 feet long, on a hard concrete or asphalt surface, and five feet from property lines where feasible. A 16-foot (8×8) container fits the size limit.

Each day in violation is a separate offense, punishable by a fine of not more than $25 per day. A unit without a permit may be removed at the owner’s expense.
What if I need more than 60 days?
Steedle can keep the loaded container at our West Deptford warehouse, 1152 Crown Point Road, so it does not count against your Pitman limits. A 16-foot (8×8) container is $150 per month.
