How a container is used in Gloucester Township

The Township describes itself as a 24-square-mile suburban community made up of a cluster of neighborhoods, with a population approaching 70,000, served by Route 42, the Black Horse Pike and county and municipal roads. Its own driving directions refer to downtown Blackwood and Glendora. With that many streets and lot types, the practical advice is the same everywhere: confirm placement with the Township first.

  1. Call the Zoning Office. Tell them you are considering a portable storage container on your lot for a set number of weeks and ask what, if anything, they need.
  2. Call us. We will talk through the box size, where it could sit, and a delivery date once the Township has answered.
  3. We deliver from West Deptford. You do not tow or reposition the container.
  4. Keep it close or send it off. If the answer is “not on the lot,” we hold the loaded container at 1152 Crown Point Road. See off-site portable storage.

What Gloucester Township requires — and who to call

We did not find an ordinance that names portable storage containers in the Township code or Land Development Ordinance materials we checked. There is a related rule. The Township’s Zoning Permit Application instructions cite Section 500-1103 of the Gloucester Township Land Development Ordinance, which requires a zoning permit before “the moving of a building or structure of whatsoever kind or nature, or any portion thereof, for storage, location, relocation, placement or erection.” Whether a delivered storage container falls under that language is a question for the Zoning Officer, not for us.

The application asks for two surveys prepared by a New Jersey land surveyor and certified within six months, the application fee, and a letter of approval from a homeowners association where applicable. The Zoning Officer has ten business days to act on a complete application. The Township’s fee schedule lists projects such as decks, sheds and driveways; portable storage is not named on it, so ask which category, if any, applies.

The Community Development & Planning Department asks residents to call before starting construction (interior or exterior), demolition or other land development so staff can advise on permits and procedures. A separate chapter, 74G, covers dumpsters and refuse containers: they must be covered and must not leak into the storm sewer system. Our containers hold household goods, not trash.

On-site or warehouse for Gloucester Township projects

On-site is the right call for a renovation that keeps you in the house, or a move you load slowly once the Township has confirmed placement. See on-site portable storage.

At our warehouse works when you would rather not apply for anything, when the driveway is full, or when you need a head start on decluttering before a sale. We also serve nearby Voorhees and Washington Township from the same West Deptford yard. If you belong to a homeowners association, check its rules as well.

What belongs in the box

Household goods, furniture, boxed kitchenware and the contents of a room being remodeled. Keep out anything illegal, flammables and fuel, propane, perishable food, plants and pets. No interior modifications. Packing and loading are optional.

Gloucester Township portable storage: common questions

Does Gloucester Township have an ordinance on portable storage containers?

We did not find an ordinance that names portable storage containers. Section 500-1103 of the Land Development Ordinance requires a zoning permit for moving a structure for storage or placement, and the Zoning Officer decides whether that applies to a container. Call (856) 374-3512 before delivery.

What does the zoning permit application require?

Two surveys by a New Jersey land surveyor certified within six months, the fee, and an HOA approval letter if applicable. The Zoning Officer has ten business days to grant or deny a complete application.

Is Gloucester Township the same as Gloucester County?

No. Gloucester Township is in Camden County. Steedle’s yard is in West Deptford, in Gloucester County, and we deliver to Gloucester Township from there.

What hours is the Gloucester Township Municipal Building open?

The Township posts Monday through Thursday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:45 p.m., with the main switchboard at (856) 228-4000. Call before you drive over.

Is a storage container treated like a dumpster?

Chapter 74G covers dumpsters and refuse containers, requiring covers and no leaking into storm sewers. It does not name portable storage containers, and ours hold household goods, not trash. Ask the Township if you have questions about classification.

How much does a container cost, and are there items Steedle will not store?

A 16-foot (8×8) container is $150 per month. Illegal items, flammables and fuel, propane, perishable food, plants and pets are not allowed, and the interior cannot be modified.
