Portable Storage Rentals in Berlin Borough, NJ

Portable Storage Units, Storage Containers, Rental Units

Berlin Borough has a detailed dumpster ordinance but, as far as we could find, nothing that names portable storage containers. Steedle Portable Storage rents 16-foot (8×8) containers for $150 per month, delivered from our yard at 1152 Crown Point Road in West Deptford. We did not find an ordinance that names portable storage containers or PODs in the Berlin Borough Code, so we treat the Borough’s dumpster rules as a warning sign for the street, not as the rule for your driveway. A call to the Borough before delivery settles it. Call (856) 848-4854 for a free estimate. Family-owned since 1918.

What we found, and what we did not

We did not find an ordinance that names portable storage containers or PODs in the Berlin Borough Code on eCode360. What the Code does regulate is dumpsters. Chapter 246 (Property Maintenance), Article VI, § 246-15 covers “the use and placement of dumpsters in public and private areas,” and it is worth reading because a Berlin official could point to it when you call:

  • A dumpster needs a permit from the Construction Office and approval from the Chief of Police before it goes in a public or private area.
  • The permit is valid for seven days and may be renewed in seven-day periods, up to 24 days in total.
  • No dumpster may be placed in a public or private area unless the Police Department finds there is insufficient room on the user’s own property, and it may not impede pedestrian or vehicle traffic or safety sight lines.
  • Reflective diamond-shaped markers, at least 18 by 18 inches, are required at both ends, and the user is responsible for damage to the roadway.
  • If a dumpster is not removed on time, the Construction Code Official can give three days’ notice and have it removed, with the cost becoming a municipal lien on the property.

That section is about trash dumpsters. It does not say pods or portable storage units, and we are not going to claim it applies to a container full of furniture. What it does tell you is that Berlin takes a close look at anything large that sits on a street, and that the Borough would rather see it on your own property.

The Code also has a Trailers and Camp Cars chapter (Ch. 309) with permits for office and storage trailers, defined as vehicles used on public streets. A wheel-less container is a different thing, and we did not find that the chapter applies to ours.

Permit fee and duration for a portable storage unit: none found. Street vs driveway: we place containers on private property, and we would not place one on a Borough street without the Borough’s say-so.

  • Construction and Planning & Zoning — through the main number, (856) 767-7777; the Borough site has a Planning & Zoning page and a Construction page
  • Municipal Clerk — ext. 304 (ordinances and official records)
  • Police Department — (856) 767-4700; the Code makes the Chief of Police the approver for dumpster placement

The Borough Code is posted on eCode360: § 246-15, Dumpster Use and Placement. We did not find a pod-specific or dumpster-specific application form on the Borough’s Forms page, so there is no direct form to link. If the Borough tells you that a permit is needed for a container, ask which form to use.

Driveway or warehouse for a Berlin job

The Borough’s own site lists a public library, a Community Center and a Historic Commission among its community pages. If the Borough tells you a driveway container is fine, a few weeks on the drive works well for a move or a renovation. See on-site portable storage.

If the lot is tight, the box would sit near the White Horse Pike or the street, or the Borough answers “no,” use the warehouse. We keep the loaded container at 1152 Crown Point Road, and it fits decluttering that will take a month or more. See off-site portable storage. We also serve Pitman and Voorhees, where the rules differ.

What belongs in the box

Typical loads are household goods, boxed papers and books, furniture and the contents of rooms being painted, floored or remodeled. Illegal items, flammables and fuel, propane, perishable food, plants and pets stay out, and there are no interior modifications. Optional packing and loading are available.

Berlin portable storage: common questions

Is there a Berlin Borough ordinance on portable storage containers?

We did not find an ordinance that names portable storage containers or PODs in the Borough Code. The nearest rule is the dumpster ordinance, § 246-15, which requires a permit and Police approval for dumpsters. Call (856) 767-7777 to confirm how the Borough treats a storage container.

Do I need a permit for a driveway container in Berlin Borough?

We did not find a permit requirement for portable storage on private property. Dumpsters need one. Because the Code is silent on pods, ask the Construction Office whether they want an application before delivery.

Does the dumpster ordinance apply to my pod?

The ordinance is written for trash dumpsters and does not mention storage containers. We do not claim it applies. If the Borough says it does, the terms are a seven-day permit, renewals up to 24 days in total, and Police approval.

Can I put a storage container on a Berlin street?

We did not find a rule that allows it, and the dumpster ordinance says a container should go on your own property unless there is not enough room. We place containers on private property or hold them at our warehouse.

When is Borough Hall open?

Monday through Thursday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., and Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., at 59 South White Horse Pike. The main number is (856) 767-7777.

What if the driveway will not work?

Steedle can keep your loaded container at our West Deptford warehouse, 1152 Crown Point Road, and bring it back when you are ready. A 16-foot (8×8) container is $150 per month.
