What Chapter 443 requires
Chapter 443, “Storage Containers, Temporary” (Ord. 2006-14, amended in 2009), defines a temporary storage container broadly: any container greater than 3 by 3 by 3 feet used for packing or storage for a move or for storing items during a renovation, and it expressly lists “portable on-demand storage containers.” For residential zones, the rules are:
- Driveway only. A temporary storage container may be placed only in the driveway. Not the side or rear yard unless it is part of the regular driveway leading from the street to the garage, and not in the right-of-way or on any drainage, access or utility easement.
- Two permitted purposes. (1) One container on a paved driveway for packing or unpacking in connection with moving, for no more than 30 calendar days. (2) One container for storing belongings during renovation or rehabilitation of the house, starting up to 14 calendar days before the work begins and ending 14 days after it finishes, but never more than 120 calendar days in total. The renovation must come with building permits from the Township Construction Office.
- Permit. Apply to the Township Zoning Officer on the Township’s form. The owner applies, or a tenant with the owner’s written permission. The application asks for the names and contact information of the container owner and the property owner.
- Sticker. The permit includes a sticker to be displayed inside the first-floor window closest to the front door, with the start and expiration dates.
- Safety. The container must be stable. If the Police Department thinks the spot is near a public path, it can require safety markings, and a container may not sit in a sight triangle where it would impede traffic.
- Extensions. On a written showing of continued need, the Township Administrator may extend the permit. The request must be in at least five days before expiration and carries a supplemental fee. The Administrator decides within five days.
- Occupancy. No people or animals inside except to load or unload, and no heat source.
- Penalty. A fine of up to $200, up to 90 days in jail, or community service, and each day counts as a separate violation.
Containers are also prohibited in some zones: the Code says they are allowed only in residential, business development and industrial zones, and not in the Business Development District within the redevelopment area.
Applying in Cinnaminson
- Pick your purpose. A move gets 30 days. A renovation gets up to 120 days, but needs construction permits first, so line those up before you apply.
- Call the Zoning Office. The Township’s Community and Economic Development page lists “Pod: Contact Zoning Office” at (856) 829-6000, ext. 2313 or 2396. We did not find a pod-specific application on the Township site, so ask the Zoning Office which form to submit.
- Pay the fee. The fee schedule in Chapter 265 lists $35 for a residential storage-container permit and $15 for the supplemental fee.
- Put the sticker in the window. It must be visible for inspection.
- We deliver for the permit dates. We bring the box from West Deptford and pick it up on schedule.

Using the driveway rule well
The Township says it took its name from the Lenni-Lenape word for “sweetwater,” and was created in 1860 by dividing Chester Township. Driveway-only is a real constraint for any lot, so walk the drive and check the sight lines before you order.
In the driveway is the only option in a residential zone, so it suits a move or a permitted renovation. See on-site portable storage.
At our warehouse is what to choose when the driveway cannot hold a 16-foot box without blocking a sight triangle, when you do not have building permits to support a renovation container, or when the job is a long decluttering that is neither a move nor a renovation, which the Code does not list as a permitted purpose. See off-site portable storage. We also serve Delran and Moorestown nearby.
What belongs in the box
Most people load furniture, boxed kitchenware, seasonal items and the contents of a room that is being redone. Please keep out illegal items, flammables and fuel, propane, perishable food, plants and pets, and do not modify the inside of the container. Packing and loading help is optional.Cinnaminson portable storage: common questions
Do I need a permit for a portable storage container in Cinnaminson?
Yes. Chapter 443 requires a permit from the Township before a temporary storage container is placed in a residential zone. The residential permit fee is $35 under Chapter 265. Apply through the Zoning Office.
How long can a container stay in Cinnaminson?
For a move, up to 30 calendar days. For a renovation, from up to 14 days before work starts to 14 days after it finishes, but never more than 120 days in total, and the renovation must have building permits. Extensions are at the Township Administrator’s discretion.
Can the container go on the street or in my yard?
No. In residential zones a temporary storage container may only be placed in the driveway, not in the right-of-way, on an easement, or in the side or rear yard unless that is part of the driveway to the garage.
Is decluttering a permitted reason for a container?
The Code lists two residential purposes: packing for a move and storing items during a renovation. It does not list general decluttering, so a clean-out with no move or renovation is better handled at our warehouse.
Who do I call for the Cinnaminson permit?
The Zoning Office through the Township’s main number, (856) 829-6000, ext. 2313 or 2396. The Municipal Building is at 1621 Riverton Road.
What if I can’t use my driveway?
Steedle can hold the loaded container at our West Deptford warehouse, 1152 Crown Point Road. A 16-foot (8×8) container is $150 per month.
