Portable Storage Rentals in Evesham (Marlton), NJ

Portable Storage Units, Storage Containers, Rental Units

Evesham Township, which uses the Marlton mailing address, has no ordinance that names portable storage containers, but its property maintenance code does limit outdoor storage. Steedle Portable Storage rents a 16-foot (8×8) container for $150 per month, delivered from our yard at 1152 Crown Point Road in West Deptford. We read the Township Code on eCode360 and the Township’s website, and we found no permit, fee or time limit written for PODs or storage units. We did find § 102-12, which says open or outdoor storage of materials and goods is not permitted on a property past the next scheduled trash collection date, with listed exceptions. Call (856) 848-4854 for a free estimate. Family-owned since 1918.

What we found in the Evesham code

We did not find an ordinance that names portable storage containers. We searched the text of the Township Code chapters that would plausibly cover them, mainly Garbage, Rubbish and Refuse (Ch. 85), Maintenance of Property (Ch. 102) and Zoning Modifications and Additional Requirements (Ch. 161), and checked the contents of the streets, vehicle-storage, trailer, outdoor-sales and zoning chapters (Chs. 133, 151, 52, 120 and 160). None used the words portable storage, storage container, storage unit or POD. What they do say:

  • Outdoor storage on a property (§ 102-12(B)). “The open or outdoor storage of appliances, building materials or rubbish, equipment, garbage, goods, glass, materials, merchandise, trash or similar items shall not be permitted,” and the items may not be stored on any premises past the next regularly scheduled trash collection date. The exceptions are property where outdoor storage is authorized by an outdoor display permit or a Planning or Zoning Board resolution, and neatly stacked cut wood for personal use.
  • Dumpsters (Ch. 102). The Code’s dumpster provisions we found cover nonresidential properties (location and enclosure). The Code also lists dumpsters in its definition of renovation “equipment.” None of this is a residential dumpster or POD permit.
  • Zoning outdoor storage (Ch. 161). The zoning rules on outdoor storage are written for nonresidential uses (distance from streets, screening, 10% of lot coverage).

Does § 102-12(B) apply to a rented storage container? The text does not say. A container full of your belongings is not exactly the “open” storage the section describes, but the section is about outdoor storage of goods, and we are not in a position to say how the Township reads it for a short-term rental unit. That is a question for the Township, and it is why we point you to the Construction Office below rather than telling you no permit is needed.

Permit, fee, form and contacts

Since no portable-storage ordinance turned up, there is no application form, fee or duration we can cite, and no direct link to give you. The Construction Office page says to call before starting work if you are unsure whether a permit is necessary. Use that for the question of whether a container on your property needs approval and for how long.

Questions worth asking: May a rented storage container sit on a residential driveway, and for how long? Does placement on the street need approval from the Township or Police? Does § 102-12(B) apply?

Driveway or warehouse in Evesham

For a short move or a renovation, a driveway placement with a call to the Township first is the straightforward approach. See on-site portable storage and moving.

If your concern is § 102-12(B) or the lack of a clear time limit, off-site storage removes the question: we keep the loaded container at our West Deptford warehouse. It also fits decluttering. Nearby towns with their own rules: Mount Laurel and Medford.

What belongs in the box

Boxed household goods, furniture, garage and basement contents, and the belongings from a room under renovation all fit well. Keep out anything illegal, flammables and fuel, propane, perishable food, plants and pets. No interior modifications. Optional packing and loading are available.
